Cleaning a Smoker's House in Cairns: What Actually Removes the Smell

A house that has been smoked in for years does not smell of smoke because of the air. It smells because nicotine and tar have settled as a film on every surface, soaked into paint, grout, carpet, curtains and the inside of cupboards, and every warm, humid Cairns afternoon lifts a little of it back out. A normal clean wipes the film off the obvious surfaces and the smell comes back within a week. Removing it means cleaning every surface in the house, including the ones nobody normally touches, and treating the odour that is left.

Why it survives a normal clean

Cigarette residue is oily and it is everywhere. It coats the tops of door frames, the inside of light fittings, the backs of cupboard doors, the ceiling, the return-air vent on the air conditioner and the underside of every shelf. Wipe the benches and mop the floors and you have cleaned perhaps a fifth of the surface area in the room. The rest keeps releasing the smell, and in the Far North the humidity makes it worse, because a damp film gives off more odour than a dry one.

The other reason it survives is porous materials. Carpet, underlay, curtains, fabric blinds and unsealed timber hold the residue inside them, not on them. You can clean the surface all day; the smell is coming from underneath.

What an extreme clean does differently

• •Every hard surface, top to bottom: ceilings, walls, door frames, skirting, the insides of cupboards and wardrobes, light fittings, switches and vents, all degreased and washed, not wiped.
• •Air conditioning: the filters, the return-air grille and the accessible housing, because the unit has been pulling smoky air through itself for years.
• •Soft furnishings and carpet: cleaned where they can be saved, and an honest call where they cannot. A carpet that has been smoked over for a decade is often a replacement, and telling you that early saves you paying to clean something that will still smell.
• •Odour treatment once the surfaces are clean, so the house smells like a house again rather than a job.

The order matters. Odour treatment on a dirty surface is a short-term mask. Surfaces first, then odour, and the result holds.

When it is a weekend job and when it is not

A house that was smoked in occasionally, or only in one room, is usually recoverable with a thorough clean, fresh paint on the worst walls and the curtains washed. A house that has been smoked in daily for years, with yellowed ceilings and a smell that hits you at the front door, is an extreme clean. It is days of work, not hours, and it needs equipment and products a domestic cupboard does not have. If you are standing in one deciding whether to tackle it yourself, the yellow on the ceiling is your answer.
